There are many ways to manage pain in labor. Although we do not offer pharmacological methods of pain relief, there are many techniques that we use to provide pain relief without the risks and numbing or disorienting effects of drugs.

Though epidural rates are quite high in hospitals, they are not without risk.  Epidurals can slow or stall labor, reduce the woman’s blood pressure dramatically thereby affecting the oxygen supply to the baby, give the woman a fever which then leads to precautionary care for the baby—separation from mom and painful tests, and increased risk of cesarean section.

Pain relieving techniques we use at The Birth House:

Freedom of movement.  At The Birth House, women are unrestrained by tubes and wires,  and are free to walk, dance, be upright, and change positions.  Ask any woman who has had a baby, what is the most uncomfortable position to be in during labor, and she’ll tell you, “Lying down in bed on my back!”  Movement is pain relief.

Water therapy.  While in labor at The Birth House, you have use of the birthing pool and the shower.  Water can do wonders in labor to relax your muscles and relieve the pull of gravity.

Massage.  Your midwives and your partner can provide pressure on your lower back, heat packs, and general massage to give your body comfort in labor.

Presence.  Just having a knowledgeable, present, familiar and kind person (your midwife!) in the room while you labor to give you support and reassurance is relief in itself.

Nutrition. Your body is working hard through your labor and works much more effectively when you have good snacks and fluids, preventing exhaustion. When your body has more energy, you are better able to cope with the intensity and hard work of labor.
